Yesterday I talked about developing a campaign world through writing adventures. So far the approach has born some fruit.
The adventure I’m working on, The Ghost of Kinneigh, has helped me detail the relationship between two different groups of elves on the island of Oilinane. Briefly, in years past one of the groups, the Aodh, came to the island and eventually defeated its inhabitants, the Aos Si.
An agreement was made that those Aos Si that wished to remain independent would live underground. A third group, the Aos Si who did not wish to go underground, live on Oilinane in small communities in a tenuous bond.
This story clearly picks up on a few different fictions of the past. The first is, quite obviously, the story of the coming of the Milesians referred to in the mythical Book of Invasions. The second, is Tad Williams’ excellent book The Dragonbone Chair. And a third source is an old D&D Known World Gazetteer titled GAZ13 The Shadow Elves.
In Oilinane, traditional fey creatures are allied with the Aos Si and sometimes assist them. I wanted to ratchet up the trickster element of fifth edition fey a little bit (or a lot), and so created the Trickster Sprite:
