Celtic Roundhouse Floorplan

As readers of the blog will know by now, I have been developing an island campaign setting based on ancient Celtic themes. The island, Oilinane, is modeled loosely on 6th century b.c.e. Connacht, a modern province in Ireland.

I’ve been trying to work as efficiently as possible, but the one thing that’s bothered me a bit is the historical accuracy of having more medieval-style houses than the traditional roundhouses that predominated Ireland right up into the common-era.

People are generally familiar with longhouses, a form used both in northern Europe and in western North America. The roundhouse was similar, especially to the European version, and seems to have been a glorified bunkhouse set around a fire.

I managed to find some plans for a roundhouse on the internet, and went ahead and did a variation on them for my own campaign. I’m thinking of presenting them as a “standard” roundhouse, which variations could be made from.
